In this one, the Rangers improve their 2019 squad by adding more RH offense to their LH-heavy lineup, with both Encarnacion and Healy. They also get Kyle Lewis from the Mariners, who has been injury-prone but whose bat is promising, and only need to give up Willie Calhoun, who has no defensive value but a strong bat. The M’s also save money on EE’s contract; Healy is expendable for them; and Calhoun figures to be a longer-term replacement as a possible DH.
This is a really interesting deal. You could sort of argue that this is a “go for it” deal for Texas, but they’re still acquiring some long-term assets. The player value isn’t enough for the M’s to do this, but getting out from under E5 has a lot of value.
Yeah from the M’s perspective Calhoun’s bat and lack of D replaces Lewis’ potential bat (and possible lack of D due to knee injuries) long-term, so you could call it a wash there. And they save money on EE. I realize it’s a stretch, but it’s fun to ponder.
