6Cleveland says no here.
Cleveland is on very good financial ground. Especially after a season of ticket sales that have far exceeded expectations. They have a new minority owner who will eventually become the majority owner. Bieber's money is a nothing burger to them at this time. I don't think being a playoff contender has much to do with Bieber being dealt at all. What they have is some very talented guys like Cantillo and Espino that can force Bieber out of the picture and onto another team. They have pitching, they have defense, they have good offense on the infield. What they lack is 3 OFers that can mash, but there's help on the way in DeLauter, Brito and possibly Rodriguez. That have plenty to deal if a good trade presents itself.
If Cleveland is gonna swap Bieber for one player... It would have to be a proven RF with pop in his bat from the right side... Maya looks like he has a nice profile on paper and Cleveland would love to have him... He wouldn't be enough by himself to get Bieber...
I agree with you that Mayea wouldn't be enough IRL, I was just trying to go based on needs of the team and trade value. Bieber's value is lower than I would expect, but maybe it's cause he had a down year, he only has 1 more season before FA, and his last year of arbitration will be expensive for the Guardians. Who do you think the Guardians would trade Bieber for in the Yankees farm system while maintaining the trade balance
It's understandable that Bieber's value is that low just like it's understandable that if that is all he's worth then Cleveland will just keep him and take the pick. I don't believe the formula that creates these values gives credence to market value. The reality is that Bieber is again healthy and is also a very good SP in a market severely thin on SP. If Bieber is dealt in a one for one deal it will be for a highly valuable, near ready prospect like Manzardo in the Civale deal. Cleveland is inching closer to being ready for a deep playoff run. Adding a prospect like Mayea does nothing for them so why give up a very good SP?
That's fair, I'm just not sure they are quite ready for a deep postseason run since they didn't make it this year in the weakest division. Plus the contracts they have handed out are only going to cost more and Bieber will cost them 8 figures in his final arbitration year. I see them trading him for controllable major league ready players so you're right in Mayea not being the right fit. But they will probably hold him for now, build his value a bit and then trade him if they don't seem like a lock for October come deadline time.
