I think Sale is going to love pitching for the Braves and I suspect he will do very well, great deal for the Braves with the way their roster is set up for a serious playoff run. Grissom should have a real good shot at playing time if he works out and is a hedge against a Story opt out after ‘25. I like the trade but Breslow and company need to get serious about acquiring starting pitching, Giolito, Bello and Crawford are going to need some help other then Pivetta, Houck and Whitlock.

Wow! What a trade! Shocking! Okay, what is the next Red Sox move! I am surprised by getting Vaughn because he is a longer term options. The RS have several infield proscepts such as Rafeala+Yorke+Mayer who will need a playing time opportunity in 2025. Most RS fans like me excepted a shorter option.

I think it’s more about the right handed bat and positional flexibility than it is as an absolute long term 2B acquisition. He has been rumored to be able to play the outfield or at least LF as well as SS and 2B, that’s great going forward.

I think the main benefits to Boston in this deal are that a) it frees up about $10M in cash to spend on someone else; b) Grissom is a long-term, controllable bat with upside, which they'll find a place for in the lineup somewhere.

Yea, penny pinching Henry probably demanded moving salary for the acquisition of Giolito. I think Cease is projected to make about $9m in arbitration so with the savings Breslow should be able to trade for Cease.

Chris Sale's 2024 predictions are highly generous with a 2.6 WAR. His last three year WAR is 2.6 WAR total. Will John Henry spend the saved money?

McPeck

Shocking, but I think I like it! I was hoping to get Kim from Padres for 2b, but I like the long term potential of this instead. Hope Grissom can settle into 2b and provide average defense. Sale has not been a reliably good starter since 2018.

temporary account

The recent free agent signings of mediocre pitching like Lynn, Montas, etc along with the Sale trade raise the price of the trade market pitchers like Cease, Bieber, etc.

gwaza

No it doesn't. Lynn is only making $10m and Montas was a very good pitcher until he got hurt, and he's still young

pezzicle

If a 2.8 fWAR projection of glass arm Sale is able to basically have 0 value at 27M contract, so that by putting in 17M in cash they are effectively buying the 17M valued Grishom. Then the 3.2 fWAR projection of recently hurt Bieber should no at all only be 18M. It should be at least 27M, meaning his trade value should be somewhere around 15M

AvocadoGhost

I've also thought Bieber is too low. Everyone's writing off a pitching genius.

Mr. Dodger

I guess that Cease is going to the Orioles.

McPeck

Not sure that Red Sox have the pitching prospect capital that Chicago has expressed they want for Cease. Hope the Red Sox continue to develop Bello and not include him in any trades.

My updated view and hope for the current state of the Red Sox; I think Breslow is in over his head just like Bloom was. Strike one - Yamamoto, Strike two - Teoscar Hernandez, Strike three - Shoto Imanaga. Next up Montgomery on deck Hader. It’s turning into another disappointing off season: make a trade with the Yankees, sign a broken down, probably injured but definitely ineffective pitcher and rumored to be signing another. 👎 on the moves made by the Red Sox for ‘24 so far (and that includes the hiring of Breslow and retaining Cora). I hope I’m wrong because there’s still time and players available through both trades and free agency. But it feels like nothing has changed in Boston to me. Other then signing Paxton my fear is Breslow and company might be done making moves for the pre season and it’s going to be; Rotation SP Lucas Giolito SP Brayan Bello SP Kutter Crawford SP Josh Winckowski SP Nick Pivetta Bullpen RH Kenley Jansen RH John Schreiber RH Chris Martin RH Garrett Whitlock RH Tanner Houck LH James Paxton LH Brennan Bernardino RH Justin Slaten RH Bryan Mata Lineup C Connor Wong 1B Triston Casas 2B Vaughn Grissom 3B Rafael Devers SS Trevor Story LF Tyler O'Neill CF Jarren Duran RF Wilyer Abreu DH Masataka Yoshida Bench C Reese McGuire MIF Ceddanne Rafaela CIF Pablo Reyes OF Rob Refsnyder

I think it's a solid deal for Atlanta, but man, they really have no depth behind their starting 9 position players. I know it's not a huge deal considering how good their starting lineup is (and there aren't many huge injury concerns), but still. AA better prioritize adding bench depth for the rest of the offseason.

travis0548

They’ll probably add a RH OF then maybe a decent utility guy midseason (i.e. somewhere better than Fletcher).

JW2024

Grissom had no place to play in Atlanta, no position and too much value still to be a career Utility. Sale gives them a CHANCE at a high end arm for the playoffs. Still think they add a RH outfielder like a Duvall and maybe pick up a pitching reclamation starter a Boyd, German or Lauer on the cheap to float at the back end for a while and see if they strike gold. But cash has got to be getting low.
