Is Catcher Will Smith currently the most important player on the Dodgers roster? Big jump for Noelvi Marte from 29.1 to 39.4

Smith is pretty crucial to the lineup construction — likely to bat 4th. Though adding Teoscar Hernandez helped balance the lineup a bit, the Dodgers are still extremely LHH heavy (Freeman, Ohtani, Muncy, Outman, Heyward, Lux). Barnes is pretty useless at the plate, so I don't see the Dodgers trading Smith this season. If Cartaya and/or Rushing show they can hit upper minors pitching this season, the Dodgers could listen on Smith next year.

If he goes down for any reason his bat would surely be missed but I wonder about the pitching staff and how an extended absence could effect the staff and with so many young arms and the pressure of a playoff run…. I wonder if a backup upgrade isn’t warranted and someone under control for 3+ years.

Barnes probably becomes the full-time catcher if that happens. As awful has he has become at the plate, he's still pretty decent behind it. They'd likely have Feduccia as the backup catcher then. Yeah, catcher would immediately be the weakest position in the lineup, but the Dodgers probably have enough offense elsewhere to make up for it.

All that being said, I think if the Dodgers trade a catcher this offseason it will be either Rushing or Liranzo. Cartaya is also a candidate to be traded, but they'd probably be reluctant to sell low on him after his rough 2023 season. If a Smith trade were going to happen (doubtful), next offseason would seem more likely.
