10For post-2025 season consideration! The Braves save a chunk of money while transitioning to Drake Baldwin as their primary Catcher. The Rays are always looking to upgrade the backstop. The A's continue to spend Fisher's money in order to keep the Union happy and add high-ceiling arms in the process.
As an offseason trade, it might work for the Rays, though I doubt they trade 2 of their best pitching prospects for a catcher.
The Rays don't really have any bats I'm interested in.
Because you want prospects only?
Well, if you want to talk Junior Caminero...
Haha.. No, I was thinking some of the following guys might be available though - B.Lowe, Y.Diaz, C.Mead, J.Caballero, T.Walls, R.Palacios, C.Morel, and K.Misner. They each have pluses and minuses, but as the 2nd or 3rd piece in a trade that should be fine. For example, Lowe would be in the final year of his deal and he is a bit streaky, but he should also be an all-star this year (though he won't). Diaz started off slow again this year, but he has more than found his footing and is under control for 2 more years. Morel isn't anything special stat-wise, but that's because the Rays are misusing him. He's hitting RHP very well, as he has done most of his career, and should be starting against RHP not LHP, notwithstanding the fact that he's a RHB. Cabby can play every position but catcher and he plays some at a gold glove level (e.g., 3B). He hits LHP more than well. Walls is all defense, but he also costs almost nothing. Mead seems to have found his footing at the plate and can play all infield positions but SS. None of these guys are all that expensive, and if paired with a good pitching prospect, represent a good return for Langeliers. Speaking of which, who is catching for the A's next year if Langeliers is moved?
Well, I'm not interested in trading 3 years of Langeliers for a rental so that eliminates Lowe and Diaz. Morel sucks. I'm over Mead. The rest are bench parts. Trading a starting C for a prospect and a bench player would be Forstian-level foolishness. Taking a SP from Tampa's rotation is a No Go. You aren't parting with Bradley or Pepiot. I could see Forst interested in Baz... therefore, I'm opposed. I'm convinced Rasmussen's arm is going to vaporize. McClanahan is currently a figment of the imagination. And I listed Sean Murphy above as the new starter for the A's.
Gotcha. I was just focusing on the Rays and forgot about Murphy. --------------- I wouldn't say all SP of the Rays are no gos. They have 5 SP right now, with McClanny thinking of starting a rehab outing and Boyle (who has looked awesome in AAA) and Seymour ready for call ups. The Rays will also be promoting 6 top pitching prospects to AAA before next year too (Curet, Cummings, Nichols, Hopkins, T.Johnson and Baumeister), so it's not a stretch to say that if the Rays can trade Bradley at his current trade value, they just might do that. ---------------- The A's need pitching, so I'm not going to try and convince you to take bench pieces if you have no interest, but a lot of teams kinda sorta suck because they have a handful of good players and nothing else. The Royals are the extreme example (2 good players, 2 maybe good players, and the rest of the position players are hot garbage) but a lot of teams struggle after the top 9 guys. A guy like Cabby goes a long way in that he hits league average and provides excellent defense at a number of positions. He's worth 2 fWAR year after year and he doesn't start. A lot of teams would be a lot better if they focused on building out their depth before worrying about assembling a Farm filled with potential stars.
I agree about team depth but I also think that only top tier teams can afford to pay a premium for deluxe bench options. Everyone else has to look at... low cost alternatives. Which the A's have in Max Schuemann. He's been worth 0.9 fWAR this year thanks to positive run defense at 2B, 3B, & SS. He's got a 101 wRC+ (which I think is a touch hot for what can be expected in the future). I think you can pencil him in for 1.5 fWAR in a season. The lower FA bins can also help. The A's are paying Luis Urias $1.1 MM and have received 0.9 fWAR in return. Trading Langeliers only makes sense if it presents the opportunity to add a lot of upside to a pitching staff that needs upside.
I see that. A's pitching is dreadful.
