3Saw on MLBTR that the Rays are making Taj available. I am not going to read into that too much, because I think basically every Ray is always available. They're always going to answer that phone and listen to offers. But this article might mean they got an offer that they are seriously considering. I don't think a playoff team would overpay for Taj. Rather, I think a team like the Braves makes a lot more sense. Taj has a ton of talent, but it just hasn't clicked. The Braves could make major adjustments and not need to worry about results, knowing that his 2025 is to be used to improve his play in 2026 and beyond. Meanwhile, they shed some salary, shed a backup catcher and a 30 year old reliever, and a far off pitching prospect. Meanwhile for the Rays, Joe Boyle or Shane McClanahan join the rotation, and the team barely loses a beat in their push for the post season. But they have picked up an excellent veteran C, perhaps the best reliever to be moved at the deadline, and an electric 18 year old lefty that they haven't had since Blake Snell. The Rays hit the jackpot if this trade works out, and the Braves have themselves an upper echelon SP with 4 years of team control for a C they no longer want.
I agree with the thought process but I can't see the Rays accepting nearly half the trade value in the form of cash (or is the cash not part of the deal, but just a way to get the system to accept the trade?).
Cash is in the deal, but it's just paying down Murphy's salary. It's making Murphy owed $45M for the next 4.5 years, or $10M per year, rather than $65M. I don't consider it trading for cash, since the Rays don't pocket anything. I just view it as what is Murphy owed by TB, and at this cost, it makes sense.
