The Padres want to shed salary and rebuild while still putting a respectable team on the field. This trade disposes of Xander Bogaerts's insane contract by replacing him with Trevor Story (.290/.371/.387 the last two weeks of the season, when fully recovered from surgery and back up to speed after missing two-thirds of the season, plus GG-caliber defense at SS), it brings GG-nominee Alex Verdugo in return for Juan Soto, it adds Tanner Houck, a low-salary option for the rotation, and it offers Miguel Bleis, with serious star potential a couple of years from now. The Red Sox bring Xander Bogaerts home to retire in Boston and add Soto for his likely walk year.
