Real trade. Note that we are assuming the 2025 option for $35M (which is contingent on Verlander pitching 140 innings in 2024 and staying healthy) does not vest in this calculation. If the option does vest, our model calculates his value at -33.8. In that instance, the Mets have agreed to kick in additional $17.5M, bringing the total money sent to $52.5M. Either way, the deal comes out fair.

As a Mets fan, I absolutely hate this trade. I'd rather keep Verlander and have a pitching staff. This trade really suggests a lot of losing in the next season or two. And as far as Ohtani goes, I see no reason why he would want to come play for the Mets this offseason unless they overpay him greatly. Otherwise we're looking at west coast angels losing situation.

If I'm the mets I look into flipping a group of prospects this off season for a reliable SP with a couple years of control. Potentially a 3 starter and then go and get a top of the line starter like Snell, Urias, or Nola. With Senga to round up their 1-2-3 in their rotation.
