I'd love if the A's make this trade, but two things I think kill it. One, I don't think the Guardians give up both of these guys. Two, the A's like to spread out the risk by acquiring multiple lower value prospects.
If Cleveland would trade Gavin Williams, Murphy would have likely been a Guardian back at the trade deadline. Cleveland is unwilling to trade Williams.
I'm not convinced that the A's would have actually traded Murphy back at the deadline without being offered a huge overpay as Shea wasn't quite ready for the everyday job. Wheras now they know that Shea can do the job and they either sign a vet to be backup or call up Soderstrom. Realistically any team will have to part with at least 2 of their top 5 prospects just to get the A's to the table. Cleveland wouldn't trade Espino, and the A's wouldn't want Bo Naylor, so I think 2 of Valera, Willams and Rocchio get the deal done. Otherwise Cleveland has to offer up the rest of the farm to get the deal done

I don't disagree, It would be on brand for the A's to trade Murphy for 5 guys who are at AA/AAA level. Valera should be the must-have piece of any deal as the A's outfield prospect depth is the big need (Especially if you figure that both Kemp & Ramon will be gone by this time next year). If a team parts with 2 of their top 5 prospects then I think the A's take it, if it's only 1 top 5 prospect like Valera then the other team have to part with half a lineup of prospects to get the deal done.
