Cardinals need pitching, and with Bello, Whitlock, and Paxton coming back soon, along with Crawford in the minors, the Red Sox can afford to give a young upside starter who has shown potential these first few games. Duran is Outfield depth for the Cards, and can could REALLY benefit from a change of scenery. The fact that Duvall getting hurt and Duran is still in the minors shows that. Red Sox are scrambling. Duvall going down is a big hit to the team, and they need a future outfielder that can man Centerfield. O'Neill seems to be at odds with management, and could be on the way out. His bat would play in Fenway, and the speed/ power would help lengthen the lineup. When Duvall comes back, he can DH, moving Turner to utility or even (in a pinch) starting at 2nd. DeJong is a contract they eat, and infield depth the Red Sox DESPERATELY need. They have Dalbec as their backup Short Stop. If Hernandez or Arroyo struggle/ get hurt, this gets ugly FAST. DeJong isn't great, but he is better than that. Win/ Win for both teams, with risks being even for both sides as well.

Outsider viewpoint. Boston does not have the pitching to spare. The Red Sox can't count on Paxton at all. Good luck getting rid of DeJong and that contract. I do agree that O'Neil would be helpful in Boston and any decent starter would be good for the Cardinals.

From an insider viewpoint as a Red Sox Fan, I think they do. For 5 spots they have Sale, Kluber, Houck, Whitlock, Paxton (who you can move to the pen if you need), Bello, Crawford, Winkowski, AND Pivetta, not to mention another minor leaguer Walter in the wings. Is it "strong"? No. But there are so many bodies that they can afford to give up their youngest/ highest upside guy. I think taking him & his bad contract on is something the Red Sox have done consistently in Chaim's tenure. They did it with Ottavino, JBJ, Hosmer. They are never afraid to add money if it benefits the team, and I think O'Neill is a perfect fit. The Cards would love to get rid of DeJong, and I think clearing up this mess with O'Neill would be worth it, plus again, they need pitching bad. I didn't think it would be THIS bad out of the gate.
