3All good points. BUT the O's currently have 9 different guys on the Top 100 lists issued by Baseball America, and four have a primary position of SS. They are: Gunnar Henderson (#1 prospect at SS on Baseball America), Jordan Westburg (@AAA, #76 prospect at SS on Baseball America), Joey Ortiz (@AAA, #93 prospect at SS on Baseball America), and finally and still aways from the ML Jackson Holliday (@A, #15 prospect at SS on Baseball America. SO the O's are loaded at SS. Therefore, I don't see the O's trading their best pitching prospect (Grayson Rodriguez) in at least 10 years for a SS (Hoerner). If they trade anyone, it'll be one of these SS, NOT Grayson Rodriguez.
No for O's. Math works on this trade, but Grayson Rodriguez is potentially a TOR starter and since O's #1 need is starting pitching this trade is a no go. Wesneski has a lot of potential and so does Kilian as SPs, but are not rated as TOR guys. Hoerner is a very good player, but it looks like the O's have a lot of players at similar positions at AAA, all with more power. It'll be interesting to see how this proposed trade looks in 3 or so years, who knows?
Ooh. Thanks for the comment. Fun! My thought process: the assumption is at this point the O's are trying to maximize the next 4 years or so. I think the O's have several front end pitching prospects in their system already. They are most certainly not going to be starved for impact pitching in the years to come. To me Wesneski is a very serviceable MOR and Kilian brings some future upside. And both are cheap. While you could move Ortiz to 2B I think bringing in a Hoerner provides you the ability to compete now. Is that worth Rodriguez? As you say - time will tell. This trade also works (maybe works even better) if you swap out Hoerner for one of the Cubs' MLB ready outfielders (except PCA) which provides the O's the ability to flip Santander or Mullins for top prospects and elongate the competitive window.
