9No Cleveland fan give this one a thumbs up because it's a garbage deal for the Guardians. Rosario is available, but he won't be given away and De Los Santos was a fantastic BP arm for them.
Brewers would take the deal provided the Red Sox sent Cruz and kept Dalbec. The last thing in the world Milwaukee needs is Dalbec. I don''t know how much the Guardians would value a pick compared to 4 years of De los Santos though. It doesn't seem like they are getting nearly enough value for Rosario/De los Santos in this deal.
It doesn't seem like Cleveland is getting nearly enough value because there is very little value in the 3 players/prospects going to Cleveland. We're talking about 2 reasonable successful major league players with varying degrees of control.
Bloom should just go out and sign Andrus & Iglesias
I am not sure what you think you're going to get for 1 year of an average SS. But clearing some 40 man room, adding minor depth at positions of need (C & 1B) and adding to the draft pool is a decent return. Plus a young for his class HS P. I like DLS, but he's your 6th or 7th reliever? I think one of the myriad of arms (Herrin, Curry, Gaddis, heck even Touissant) can backfill.
I have no problem with the values here. The problem is that Cleveland's system is loaded and they won't want 3-4 guys to get that value. You'd be better off using 1 good prospect even if the value comes up a little short. The idea of unloading a truckload of invaluable prospects to get the same value from 1 player isn't a good one. Especially for a team that isn't in a rebuild. In a way this deal is bass ackwards because it's the Red Sox that won't make the playoffs and need to add prospects, not Cleveland. DLS was solid in Cleveland's BP. I don't care how or where you rank him. He's one of the reasons it was one of the better BP in baseball. You don't give that away for a steamy pile. When the comp pick has more value than any of the 3 prospects then you know it's a steamy pile.
The system is loaded, but not with C or 1B prospects. You're going to lose Rosario next year. This way you at least get a pick for him. Jordan had a 128 wRC+ in High A while being 3.5 years young for the level (~100 PA, but also had 122 wRC+ in low A over 415 PAs). Hickey posted 936 OPS in both low and high A while being old/old-ish respectively for the level. Rodriguez-Cruz is more a flier. I like DLS but relievers are volatile. His HR rate went from 20.5% in 2021 to 6.5% last year, and walks dropped from 4.6/9 to 2.9. Did the Cleveland pitching machine change something to make those sustainable? Maybe, but with the plethora of arms ready in AAA something has to give eventually. Could also slot in Curry instead (went back to look at swapping DLS and Curry and DLS is now a 2.6 vs the 5.7 above. Odd...) Ultimately, Cleveland does need to give themselves some 40-man flexibility. And they don't seem to want to use the prospect depth at positions of strength. This uses MLB pieces and does that while adding some intriguing depth at positions of need and making sure Rosario doesn't get away for nothing. They aren't extending the QO.
Cleveland values defense first at catcher and that is not Hickey. It doesn't matter what other stats that you quote for Hickey, he is unable to play the required defense that Cleveland demands, he will never play catcher for the Guardians. There is nothing intriguing about Hickey. Jordan is a future DH. again, not real intriguing.
There's more C than meets the eye. They drafted 2 or 3 more C in the international draft last year. They have Naylor and Lavastida who are young and controlled for a long time. They have ridiculous SP depth and a good portion of it will need to be dealt before hitting FA. They'll add what is needed when they deal any/all of Bieber, Quantrill, Civale and Plesac. They will likely need to deal some MIF depth as well. Point is, there is plenty of good talent that can net a good return. I agree that BP's are volatile, but if it is risk averse to deal DLS then it has to be risk to acquire him. Regardless, a contending team isn't going to deal a good BP arm for low level, low rated prospects. Especially a team that also has a very deep and talented system like Cleveland's. I'm not sure they don't intend to keep Rosario to my dismay. If they choose to deal him then I'm not really concerned with the return honestly. The fly in the ointment in this deal is DLS.
