This trade has a lot to like in it, but if the Rays are trading McClanny they need to get a good ML pitcher or top pitching prospect in return. May has always had great potential, but in 4 years in the league he has thrown all of 143 innings and generated only 2.2 fWAR. That's just not the profile of a player the Rays would want as a major piece in the return for McClanny. You can't help the team if you can't get on the field. I'm not a fan of Busch to the Rays either given his defensive limitations, but he's a lefty bat and the Rays could use more of those. Love Vargas and Cartaya to the Rays though. Swap out May and Busch for Miller and another piece and I'd like that trade a lot. This is a nice starting point in any potential trade, but the Rays are in win-now mode and McClanny is their 1A or 1B Ace. Rays aren't trading him unless it's for a return they literally can't say no to. I don't think this trade qualifies, particularly because there is no ML piece in it that is sure to help the Rays in 2023. Lots of potential though...
