9Um...Why in the world would the Nats do this.
Oh boy. I am so glad you're not apart of the Nats front office. Because you'd get laughed at by everyone including Rizzo. You don't trade a top 5 prospect who is also a local kid because he won't be up at the beginning of 2024. Crews won't be up until late 2024 at the earliest, and Hassell will probably be the same. Nats aren't realistically competing until 2025. If anything they'll trade Vaquero for a pitcher because if you're going by who's the furthest away it's him by a mile.
Uh ... Rizzo did just that with Giolito. Rizzo lives to unload his farm and get ML talent. If there were no service time considerations, Crews would be starting in Double A, spend a month or so in Triple A next year, and would be a major league call up by mid-May. And if the Nats are competitive, Rizzo won't hesitate to call up Crews. Just like he did with Harper.
2 totally different situations though. Nats were in win now mode when they made that Giolito trade. They are sellers right now and would not make any sense to sell of their best prospect for a guy who is good, but doesn't fit their timeline one bit. Once Corbin's contract ends after next year the Nats open up 30+ mil in money to spend on whoever they want. This type of move is a desperate one and the Nats aren't that type of team like the Angels are right now.
Hold on. Dylan Cease is amazing. Chicago is a shit show of an organization. But Dylan Cease is top 5 pitcher in all of baseball level of talent. Cease has two more years of control, and the Nats will be rid of the Corbin contract after next year. They can absolutely extend him. Ownership has said, publicly, that they want to win. That means moves like this and free agency signings. Which means they can make a signing this offseason. Also, frankly, I think Wood is extremely overrated by folks who have only seen small samples. His struggles in Double A are an indicator of what's to come, not his age. He is too tall and can't handle fastballs up in the zone. Its more than likely that Wood isn't MLB ready until late in 2025, and probably isn't an effective MLB hitter until 2026 or even 2027. Which is far too late on the Nats timeline with Gore, Gray, and Cavalli. Like I said, with an ace level pitcher like Cease and a decent free agent bat (Hoskins, Hernandez, Chapman) this team competes for a WC in 2024 and probably the division in 2025.
This team is on the verge of another 100 loss season. 1 pitcher and 2 or 3 bats won't change much if anything at all. Trading a top 5 prospect who's upside is through the roof is such a terrible idea for a rebuilding team. You can think he's overrated all you want, but there's a reason neither of us are scouts or player personal guys.
Nats need pitching. Crews will be ready by next May. Hassell soon after. Wood is the odd man out.
Because an outfield of Hassell in LF, Crews in CF, and Wood in RF doesn't work? If anything Hassell is the odd man out. Not the top 5 prospect in all of MLB. I don't think you understand the situation the Nats are in at the moment.
Im very aware. The Nats are an ace and a decent free agent signing away from WC contention. Wood is the furthest one off. Trade him for the ace, sign a decent free agent 1B/DH and this team is off to the races
