Anything for NYY to get rid of Donaldson. They can move IKF to 3B or play LeMahieu there or sign a stopgap like Longoria or make a trade for someone like Luis Arraez. Whatever. The money they save in the deal (about $29mm) can be spent MUCH more efficiently. Don't think of this as trading Arias & Sweeney to get rid of Donaldson -- think of it as trading Arias & Sweeney to acquire up to $29mm of better assets for the team. For instance, maybe they spend some of the dollars saved on a one-year deal for Michael Conforto. Or they could extend a talent like Nestor Cortes Jr, using some of the payroll space in '23 to help decrease the amount they have to pay him in subsequent years. Sweeney & Arias are expendable for a NYY team that has Volpe, Peraza, & Cabrera all near Major League ready. While the Yanks love Higgy, they have internal options in Ben Rortvedt (defense-first catcher acquired last offseason from MIN) and Austin Wells (strong offensive catch who should be ready at some point in '23) who could easily serve in the role of back-up to Platinum Gold Glove Winner Jose Trevino. For Detroit, they're still trying to rebuild and don't have any one they desperately need to play at 3B. Detroit's not a poor, small market team -- they have money to spend. In this case, why not spend it on the Yankees #6 and #11 prospects, grab an extra catcher, and get a year of a stopgap 3B who you might be able to flip at the deadline for more prospects? Donaldson is a good rebound year candidate, and if he hits like the Donaldson of old (.247/.352/.475 in '21), no reason to think he couldn't pull in a prospect or two (I mean - hey, the Yanks got Clayton Beeter for a couple months of Joey Gallo, and he had less hits this year than Judge did home runs). Sweeney and Arias add to a farm system that continues to need replenishing as the team attempts to return to competitive status. Meanwhile, Higashioka has proven his worth as a game-caller and could be an asset to the Major League squad.
