4What in the world would the Brewers want with Dom Smith? He had only a .692 OPS and 46 RBIs. Milwaukee could get that kind of production out of a young guy.
I don't hate this. Gray is a nothing prospect. I would def trade him for a chance that Smith comes back to form. It's a low cost move.
A) What young guy do the Brewers have for 1B? Maybe Black, but it’s hard to completely trust a guy with so few ABs above AA. B) He’s better than Téllez, and would be cheaper in this scenario. The Brewers only give up a marginal prospect in Gray, and get a solid bench bat. Maybe strike lightning and he returns to 2019-2020 form.
Milwaukee is looking to re-sign Santana to play 1B. They look for versatility on the bench and Smith is not it. If he hasn't returned to form in three years the chances of that happening are slim and none. You are right, Gray isn't much of a prospect, but Smith isn't worth a spot on the bench either.
