9Major overpay for Cleveland.
One wonders how long A.J. Preller will keep his job. The Padres have a very small media market, they've spent a lot of money for years, their farm system is depleted, and results have been disappointing.
AJ should have taken the slower route and used said prospects to build most of the roster since a lot became solid players...
Actually the one thing that keeps AJ around is his ability to build the farm. They already have the best C prospect in baseball. They have the best 'performer' in the MILB last year as a pitcher, and they have an elite SS/2b prospect. He hasn't traded too many thus far that were a major blow. AJ's biggest problem is offering contracts.
Actually I think you had De Los Santos to high... Reason why, he had good numbers and whatnot, but he didn't do well in high leverage situations. Cleveland has a ton of good arms that can pitch in the low to medium type of leverages... They don't have the high leverage guys right now. They badly needed to get Clase and Stephan veteran help. Barlow is also familiar to them and the division. SSS but DLS didn't have great numbers with Bo Naylor either, but was good with Gallagher and Fry. (Ps. It could be nothing or could be personalities not matching. We don't see that stuff as fans).
Leverage is factored into our model with relievers. Barlow's gmLI in 2023 was 1.35, de los Santos was 1.30, so there wasn't much of a difference there. We know Barlow has a stronger track record in that regard, but overall, de los Santos' valuation still comes out significantly higher even with that difference.
Exactly!
DLS value here was extremely fair and he earned it. You're just buying into some cherry picked stats BS when you say "he didn't do well in high leverage situations". They don't have high leverage guys right now? I find that hard to believe and the $6M it cost to acquire Barlow didn't significantly upgrade that situation from DLS.
Cleveland wouldn't have made this move unless they thought they got better from it at the end of the day. Internally, Cleveland rated Barlow higher than DLS...
