6This is part of a reshaping of COL with a goal of improving both the short and long term outlook and a focus on trying to turn Coors from a weakness into a strength. To take advantage of Coors, I targeted slider-heavy pitchers that avoid contact, defense in the OF and at C, and contact over power on offense. In general, I also gave preference to young players and pitching depth. The other trades can be seen on my profile and total to Nolan Jones, Michael Toglia, Elias Diaz, Peter Lambert, and Grant LaVigne outgoing; and Bubba Chandler, Jared Jones, Abrahan Gutierrez, Myles Straw, Tyler Freeman, Zach King, Tre’ Morgan, and Darren McCaughan incoming. Additionally, COL signs Sean Manaea, Shintaro Fujinami, and Austin Hedges, and would need to waive two players, likely Noah Davis and Alan Trejo.
The Rays often target pitchers who don’t look very good to the outside eye, but I have a hard time believing they would trade their 3rd rounder from last year for Lambert. He’s pretty bad.
Lambert has been significantly better outside of Coors, both in terms of stuff and results. He's still not great, but he's a cheap way to get 100+ passable innings, and I think the TBR's pitching dev might be able to boost his profile from #5 starter on a bad to as high as #4 starter on a good team
Lambert is better away from home but he’s still around 5.0 FIP/xFIP. That’s not much better than his overall stats. I’d also want to know why he pitched nearly 100 IP in 2019 and then didn’t pitch in the Show for the next 3 years.
He got hurt late in spring training 2020, got TJ later that year, came back at the very end of 2021, and was on a pretty tight innings limit in 2022. He looked all the way back last year, so I don't think he's a long term injury concern (although going to TBR wouldn't help). Do you think TBR would be more amenable to moving a different prospect with a similar value, a Keegan/Jones/Simpson?
Maybe. I think you’re targeting the wrong prospects though. Rays aren’t likely to trade anyone in the low minors or who isn’t eligible for Rule V for Lambert.
