Cleveland does not need another middle infielder, so Ortiz does not work for the Guardians.

Just FYI. Cleveland may be open to moving players. Listening to MLB talk on SIRIUS radio today. Subject was RSNs (Regional Sports Networks) and Bally Sports (Diamond Sports Group?) bankruptcy. Discussion was about Cleveland losing significant TV money, which may motivate them to reduce payroll or not play in free agency. Apparently Cal Quantrill's $6.6MM salary was a reason to dump him, with the impending revenue drop in '24.

The idea of trading Clase is not a salary dump. The next three years of his five years of control is very affordable even for the Guardians. This is about trying to meet needs and improve the team. If the right offer does not present itself, Clase will remain a Guardian.

There has been no talk about the need to reduce payroll any further and they rid themselves of Quantrill's $6.6M and traded for Barlow's $7.2M. Secondly, they never play in the FA market until late anyway so that isn't some newfound idea. All that talk had no substance. Clase is owed $2.9M in 24 so I hardly doubt that's a burden. I'm not sure how reducing payroll and accepting a prospect they don't need is tied together anyway. I don't want to undersell how much I value Mayo. Having said that either he or Naylor has to be able to play a competent corner OF or he doesn't fit. He's precisely the difference making bat that Cleveland needs, but he has to have a place to play. If I were the Orioles I'd be looking to move all of Santander, Mountcastle and Hays before Mayo, but that's just me.
