Pretty close to fair? Yankees get an MLB-tested GG-nominee average MLB hitter for a year. Red Sox get a replacement-level bullpen arm, a #12 prospect who was drafted in the sixth round two years ago, and a guy whose most recent work was posting an ERA over five in the Cape Cod League. Alex Cora used his ownership connection to throw away a year of talent. If very-smart Craig Breslow can make this work out to Boston's advantage, it's his first step on the Road to Greatness.
Based on the surplus value numbers, yes. Keep in mind the Red Sox just saved about $9M.
Need to clear salary for Soto 🙏
Soto Coming to NY too
Yes, it's $9M, but I don't think that justifies letting a good player go at 60%* of his value. Even if they need the salary cap room--and I hope that this is a sign that Yamamoto will commit to Boston--I'd expect Verdugo to be worth a couple million more elsewhere. John, you know MLB better than I ever will, but I'm pretty good at knowing the Red Sox players' values. Unless Breslow sees something, and he might, this looks like a win for the Yankees. * Or less than 60%...Cora often used other players to their best advantage and filled in with or benched Verdugo.
First name from the competition I think
