11Update: So this trade is now real, contingent on a Glasnow extension -- which may have some surplus value. So the cash here is not yet real, but for now think of it as possible surplus value on the extension.
I would have just kept Pepiot if I was LA. Glasnow's health is a huge risk.
LAD is also reportedly getting $4M in cash, so there's that. Now let's see what the extension looks like...
The Dodgers are cheating by getting Othani's salary deferred over extra years. MLB should punish them with 70 million AAV per year. They are dodging the Luxury tax penalties. They would have been slammed tax payments+draft penalties for years. The Mets didn't get the same. A blatant Cheat. Football contracts system.
How is it cheating when MLB themselves made the rule? It's up to the player how they want their money deferred.
Not really. The present day value of the contract is 10 years, $460m, so the luxury tax hit is $46m a year. If deferrals were banned, the Dodgers would have just signed him to a straight 10 year, $460m deal and the luxury tax hit would have been the same.
With the high cost of SP FAs this off-season, extending Glas for a 6-pitcher SPR with Ohtani . Might be a way to keep both healthy?
Dr Jekyl: Premier spin rate (90th percentile), premier extension (85th percentile). MLB ready. Right up the Rays alley. Mr Hyde: Poor MiLB command, doesn't K anybody, gives up a buttload of fly balls, BABIP king of baseball, and somehow stranded like all but 1 runner who reached against him. That ain't gonna last lol. I can 100% see like a 3 FIP and a 6 xFIP for Pepiot next year. I still like it for the Rays. Pepiot could be Alex Cobb, he could also be Matt Moore and be better suited for the pen due to poor command and terrible ground ball rates. Time will tell.
Not a fan of Margot coming to LA, and not a fan of DeLuca coming to TB. I have a feeling that Margot will be part of another trade, like we've seen with other players this offseason.
I agree. MM does have strong splits vs LHPs for platoon with JHey, Outman, and Busch (LF). LAD should have paid Senzel 2.5m for same skillset and 3B defense. Is 3y/66m extension fair market for Glas with incentive over 120 IP? That would add 12 TV to balance trade?
So is every SP. Ask Ohtani, Verlander, Scherzer, DeGrom, McClanahan, Rodon... Pepiot is definitely not immune to future arm trouble.
