7I know the values don’t really align here, but after reading the Pasquantino rumors, it sounds as if Miami is looking to address immediate needs rather than extracting the most value. Neto would address one of Miami’s biggest needs for the foreseeable future and isn’t arb-eligible for 2 more seasons. The Angels finally get a legit #1 starter and, unlike Miami, can afford to extend him long-term. Obviously there’d be some other pieces involved, but this would be the framework.
Allow me to bring you up to date.Peter Bendix was the GM of the Tampa Rays is now the Marlins PBO.Bendix at Tampa usually came out ahead on most trades and this offer would end up in the wastepaper basket.
Ng was also a good GM and came out ahead in most of her trades, including the Arraez deal which the model would have outright rejected. Reportedly, the Royals turned down a Pasquantino for Luzardo swap. Pasquantino and Neto are similarly valued, both pre-arb for 2 more years, and Neto fills a much bigger organizational need. I think the model is a little too high on Luzardo here.
The problem is that Zach Neto had some absurd leadership skills in the Angels. The team went 43-41 when he played but were 30-48 when he didn't. His performance is about average, but the Angels might just not be willing to trade Neto under any circumstances.
I love Neto and would hate to part with him, but you absolutely *have* to move him if you can get a controllable front-end starter. I also think the record narrative is a bit overblown since he played a majority of his games during the first half of the season, when the team was relatively healthy. He got hurt around the same time as Trout, Ward, Urshela all went down, which obviously affected the team’s record. I’d rather move him over O’Hoppe, but I’d trade Schanuel over both.
The Angels will have to get Luis Rengifo to play SS when Neto gets traded, and Rengifo's defense is atrocious. Neto has the speed, defense, athleticism and leadership that the Angels team lacks right now.
They could also sign a SS to a short-term contract until Paris is ready. There’s been rumors about Tim Anderson, or someone like IKF could fill the void. Remember, the Angels OD SS last season was Gio Urshela haha
