This wouldn't even come close to getting Clase... First off, Cleveland would rather cut Straw than add him as a negative 11 value... Then we have to look at the return... Morel is fine and he is a must... But Cleveland will also want a top/solid SP prospect/just graduates SP prospect... Then they would likely want a couple more prospects after that... They don't want Tauchman that's for sure... Ballesteros isn't a catcher in Cleveland's mind, so his value is going to be way lower to them... Clase also doesn't have to be traded and Cleveland is notorious for never taking below what they want or paying more than they want in a deal. Cubs because of Morel and having some solid SP prospects have a legit chance of getting Clase, but this deal won't do it...

According to 670 radio in Chicago, Cleveland asked for Cade Horton as part of their trade package so this package certainly won't get it done.

You can keep Clase that’s fine with most Cub fans , don’t think they will entertain any trades where Horton is involved just like Guardians wouldn’t trade Williams .

I am fine with keeping Clase. Cleveland does not need to trade him unless they get exactly what they want. The packages the Cubs Fans are touting on X are outrageously bad for Clase. They want something for nothing.

BigBat

No, most Cubs fans want Clase. They just want him on the cheap which obviously isn't going to happen. I wouldn't want to give up Horton either, but at that same time you have to understand why the asking price is so high for Clase.

jamesrobert

Your wrong, Cub fans mostly want to improve bullpen but are fine with Alzolay as the closer, just want more & better help getting there & don’t want management using best young pitchers to accomplish that, we have an abundance of very good position players about ready to advance, some thing Guardians are short on. This is the only reason Cubs would possibly trade Morel.

He is not wrong. I guess you are not on X (Twitter). They want Clase badly, but few are willing to pay the needed price.

jamesrobert

If you are following X you are going to get all of the looney tunes , check out Bleacher Nation where most Cub fans with any sense go.

BigBat

Yeah sure, I'll go check out the minority on Bleacher Nation, but it doesn't change the fact that most Cub fans would love to see Clase acquired. It's Horton and Morel or not even worth talking about. If I were a Cubs fan I wouldn't like that either. As a Guardians' fan I can understand that, but Cleveland isn't looking to dump Clase so enough of these ridiculous offers. It will take a haul to get Clase and I would think as logical baseball fans you and I could agree on that.

This isn’t a valid comparison. The Guardians won’t trade Williams because they can’t (or won’t, to be fair) spend any money for free agent starting pitching. The Cubs spend almost $100M more (double) than Cleveland. If Cleveland acquired Horton they take on almost all of the risk. The expectation that a 21 year old, barely in AA, with less than 100 innings pitched, will be a TOR starter in 2025 or 2026 is a minefield. But this is the only way Cleveland survives. The Cubs have way more options.

But if I was the Cubs, I wouldn't move Horton for Clase personally... If I could use Wesneski plus Brown I would do that for sure over Horton...

mrvics hat

I’m positive they would not either, but that would be my ask for Cleveland. Both Brown and Wesneski are fine as a 4/5, and Cleveland should target them in a lesser trade, but for trading Clase I would want a potential TOR guy, even despite the risks. 4/5 guys are very expensive (MLB has gone crazy!), but 1/2 guys are unicorns, and to get one the reward outweighs the risk.

Cubs aren't going to trade a #1/2 possible starter for a Closer which is a volatile position... Cubs on the other hand are willing to give up multiple MOR/BOR types with a solid bat and another prospect... This fits Cleveland's needs way more in my mind and is more likely to happen from the Cubs side... Cleveland via the Rumors though want Horton plus some... So we both know Cleveland never lowers their price so I am doubting the Cubs can get Clase now...

Good take. As I’ve mentioned I just don’t like the Cubs guys enough. Close, but not enough. I would hate to look back in a couple of years and regret a trade that was supposed to transform my team and it did not. That’s the vibe I’m getting from the Cubs players.

BigBat

No, that doesn't "fit Cleveland'snees way more". You speak of all the SP depth in another post and then suggest that taking on 2 more questionable SP is a good idea? Cleveland will want Horton and Morel as they should and Chicago will probably pass at the idea as they should. This isn't a good match guys.
