9Boston fans might be missing Bloom these days.
Dark days RS fans?
While this was a considered a major overpay by the simulator, I see it as a win for both sides. Schreiber’s numbers regressed in 2023, so most of value lies in his 3 years of control. The Red Sox get Sandlin, who had good numbers last season and despite lacking a 3rd pitch, has a much higher ceiling. The Red Sox seem to be focusing heavily on pitching development, so they probably see him getting even better. This also clears a 40 man roster spot for the Red Sox to potentially sign someone.
All good points. From a modeling perspective, Schreiber's ridiculously good 2022 still carries some weight, as virtually all projection systems have him regressing positively to the mean in 2024, roughly in the 0.4 fWAR range. Plus there's those years of control.
I do still think he'll be a good piece for the Royals.
I agree with Rhyde.... people will focus on that Sandlin was KC #20 prospect LAST YEAR....ESPN had him as the 5th KC prospect this year. The Sox seem to be focusing on 2026 when hopefully Teel, Mayer and Anthony will all be in the league.
Sandlin is #17 on the Baseball America list, with a 45/High risk rating; on Fangraphs, he's a 40+. Both, therefore, see him as either a back-end starter or middle reliever. So: low ceiling, with the usual bust risk of pitchers. Kiley is great over at ESPN, and sometimes he spots things others don't, but he's only one expert in a field of many.
I think most likely it opens up a spot on the 40 man roster to add a LH Pitcher, and it probably comes from the NRI’s in camp; Cam Booser, Lucas Luetge, Jorge Benitez, Helcris Olivarez, or maybe SP Zach Penrod has a good camp and makes the team. Could be they’ll stay at 39 and see what other teams do during spring training and who becomes available, or maybe, just maybe, they’re getting ready to make a deal or a signing, but the way the off season has progressed so far, I’m extremely doubtful. This trade on its own is just more of the same from the past few years, adding and subtracting from the edges of the roster. I’m fine with getting a young controllable SP for 3yrs of a fungible RP. And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Red Sox make 2, 3 or more very similar trades by the end of April.
always thought bloom was fine and clearly he wasn't the problem its clear ownership didn't allow him to spend money
