Nice haul for the White Sux. I’m totally expecting AJ to flip Cease at the deadline when the Pods are 10 games behind the Dodgers.

marlins-rays

that would happen in past. but third wild card may change that. and two years of control any team like SD can afford.

AussieGiants53

Some nice pieces for the rebuilding White Sox. Not so sure this propels the Padres into contention but Cease will help

Steep price, but fair. Thorpe is a consensus T100 guy, while Zavala and Iriarte are on some T100 lists. Steven Wilson probably gets flipped at the deadline for more prospects.

i really like this trade for San Diego. They get two years of Cease (4 WAR pitcher) without giving up their top 2 pitching prospects. That's a huge win in my book, and while I don't think the Padres are destined to be sellers at the deadline, if they choose to sell Cease, they'll be able to recoup 100% of this trade value at the Deadline, assuming Cease is healthy and has a year comparable to the past few years.

Right, and trading for a pitcher with two years of control also gives them multiple options: if they make the playoffs, he's a useful piece, so there's a value bonus there; if they keep him next season, they can QO him and get a draft pick; if they trade him next offseason, the value of that pick can be added on to his normal value. Lots of ways to go.

Yep. Good trade for the Padres. I've really liked their offseason, all things considered. To be forced to retool on the fly for financial reasons and come out of the storm with a team as good as they have is really impressive. I think they will really regret the Machado extension, and to a lesser extent the Bogaerts signing, in future years, but they have an open window right now and they're going for it. 2 months ago I thought their window was closed. Damn impressive offseason.

What if they came out of nowhere and signed Snell... All of a sudden a leader in the wild card hunt.

SD ❤️

If they did that, it would be maybe not just for the wild card, but also propelling them to contend with the Dodgers for the division.

Credit to you/the site. Valuations seem to be remarkably spot-on here in aggregate.

Thanks very much.

i don't see them trading him. they'll be able to recoup 100% of this trade value at the Deadline i also dont see. his value went up cause control . mean on a team like SD. plus top 2 pitching prospects of SD would not got packet deal in return .

I was hoping that Cole was out for the season. The Yankees would gut their farm system to get a mediocre Cease season giving Red Sox fans something to laugh at. Why did the Padres need Cease? Sure, he could help them, but a steep price in the long term. Cease will decease quite a bit at the trade deadline. So Padres reselling will only get a faction in return.

mp2891

Cease's value will drop at the deadline only if he's injured or has a bad year. Teams always overpay for pitching at the deadline.

Spot on John! Helluva job! I think this is a good trade for both clubs in their current conditions. SD will need Cease if they have any chance of hanging with the Dodgers and the White Sox get 3 nice prospects that fit in nicely with their rebuild. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilson flipped for another good prospect at the deadline.

Thorpe was one of the players San Diego got for Soto.
