3Weird trade idea of the day. Yankees send Stanton back to the Marlins with close to his entire salary paid by NYY, plus a very promising teenage pitcher for the future. In return, they get a cheap starting pitcher with tons of potential who just hasn’t put it all together yet.
In other words a over the hill NY Yankee and one who has not not even climb the mountain.
That's one way to look at it. The other is to think Stanton still has a little more gas left in the tank (and at $2MM per year is well worth the risk), and that LaLane has the stuff to be a pretty good pitcher in time. There's also the fact that the Marlins can't figure out how to get Cabrera to pitch to his considerable talent and pretty soon folks aren't going to see that talent, they're just going to focus on his results. His results suggest he is a very average 4-5 ERA/FIP/xFIP pitcher who can't produce more than 1.0-1.5 fWAR per year and who might get released before Arb3 when his pay exceeds his production (ie: his trade value today is solely a function of his pre-arb salary). That said, this trade proposal isn't a realistic proposal and I would be shocked if either team would consider something like it.
