7Down vote for Oakland. This does a lot to improve the Cubs and clear possible chaff from their 40 man roster than it helps the A's. Miller and Cabrera share the same problem... you never know when their arm is going to be available. Why trade for more of the same? Arias and Hodge have been moved to relief, limiting their upside.
Tend to agree with Grover about Cabrera being wrong fit for Athletics. Alcantara makes a better centerpiece for Miller. Maybe Arias and Hodge. Leave Marlins out. Cubs need Miller, or someone like him.
Alcantara makes for a better centerpiece for the Cubs as PCA makes him redundant in CF. I think he'll need longer than his two remaining option years to fully develop; if he ever does.
You asked for hard throwers in a previous down vote. Cabrera is a hard thrower with more upside as a SP than Miller has a RP. Arias touches 100. Cubs are not clearing chaff from the 40 man in this trade. All three players the A’s would acquire could add real value to their current 26 man roster.
I did ask for power arms. But Cabrera has the same durability questions as Miller, so where's the upside? I always trust what the other side says about their players and the Cubs say Hodge and Arias are relief pitchers. Maybe you gamble on converting Arias back to the rotation if you've got a more dependable centerpiece than Cabrera but that's not what is being offered. Hodge is struggling in AAA, Arias has 9 IP above High-A, they're not adding value to the current 26 man roster any time soon.
Hodge has pitched four games in AAA and has an ERA of 3.60. How do you see this as struggling? I would bet that Hodge will be pitching meaningful innings in Chicago during their playoff chase this year. It’s wild to think he couldn’t hack it in Oakland; the A’s are playing nearly all replacement players. Arias is on the 40 man and also will likely be used by the Cubs as a multi-inning weapon, possibly as soon as post-All Star break.
HIt is a small sample size for Hodge but a 7.2 BB/9 is a problem. He's also on the Chicago 40 man, meaning the A's need to cut 2 players to free up spots if they accept this deal. And if you think Hodge and Arias can give a contending Cubs team bullpen innings this year then why worry about adding Miller? I don't trust Mason to stay healthy all year... but I feel the same way about Cabrera. If the A's trade Miller they should center the deal around someone you can at least HOPE can make it through an MLB season.
