3I realize Bieber has negative value, but so does Neris. This is actually a trick maneuver on my part. Cubs get to wine and dine Bieber, sell him on the idea of staying in Chicago. Sign him to some 2-yr. sweetheart deal while he recovers from TJ surgery. Or possibly let him throw left-handed, in which case he would still outpitch Neris. In the meantime, Neris loses 2 or 3 games for the Guardians, before they release him, knocking them out of pennant. It's a mean thing to do, but, hey, it's baseball.
My proposed trade is more of a joke to highlight what a terrible acquisition Neris was for the Cubs but pretty typical for Jed Hoyer, who is one of the dumbest GM's of all time. Nobody else would sign a fat 35 yr. old with a declining fastball to a $9 million deal. His 2023 numbers were inflated because of luck (Hitters had a miserable .219 BABIP against him.). Before that it was Kimbrel and Davis. He loves to acquire relievers whose best years are behind them. Cubs have NOBODY to pitch a 9th inning!
Nobody wants Neris bro, if they want Bieber just sign him, there's no possible outcome where we trade Bieber and become a better team. Besides, there's no guarantee that Bieber's going to be back where he was coming out of tj.
