I don’t see how this trade makes the Rays better. They swap Diaz for Carpenter at DH and save some money and add some control. Maybe Carpenter is the better player, but I suspect he just had his career year and both players will revert to their long run average. In return for Carpenter, the Rays sacrifice their closer (while adding two nothing prospects). Net-net, I don’t think this trade works for a Rays team that is unlikely to compete in 2025 and is looking to add players for the 2026 and later years who will actually matter to those teams. Carpenter will be in arbitration then and on trade watch and the two prospects will probably be forgotten by then.
