5Only reason why I don't think Sproat is in play is because Preller seems to prefer pitchers with at least some MLB innings under their belt. I can't remember him trading for a AAA pitcher then sticking him in the MLB rotation, and Padres need MLB-tested rotation help.
I don’t like this trade for San Diego either. Sproat is a great prospect, and maybe he makes sense, but he also moved through 3 levels last year and probably needs to spend half to all of 2025 in AAA. Acuna though is the real problem, if the goal is to play him in the outfield. Simply put, he doesn’t have the bat for a COF. This trade represents a big step back for the Padres in 2025. Maybe that’s not a problem, but I didn’t think that was their plan.
No way Sterns trades top pitching prospect in AAA for a 1 year rental.
Last year Preller acquired a minor league pitcher in Drew Thorpe and then flipped him for an experienced starter - Cease.
Or the Mets would just absolutely not give up Sproat in this scenario.
