5Yikes…big drop for Devers, the only thing that has changed is he’s been moved off of 3B to DH….so, I guess Devers defensive value was worth somewhere between 28.4 & 43?….at least that’s how it looks, two weeks ago he was at 23.2, thirteen days ago he was at 8.6 (I thought this was the defensive adjustment) now he’s at negative 19.8.
Right, all the projection systems have downgraded him due to the move to DH. Even a bad 3B has some defensive value, but a DH has none at all. And the fact that he has 9 years left on his contract magnifies the problem, as that side of the equation is fixed.
Shouldn’t a player who gets the majority of his at bats as a DH but is versatile defensively and fills a utility role have some defensive value?
Update: On further inspection, we noticed that his contract has deferrals in it. Once we calculated the effect of those, it changed his surplus value to -0.3. So his contract is basically even now.
Thanks John, and thank you for all the hard work from everyone involved ❗️
