7I know why Martinez has such a low score is because of he is owed about 12M more this year on his salary but that is not an overpay for a #3 or #4 starting pitcher and certainly very little to the deep pocket Yankees. Problem with all this is, based on just score you would never get close to a fair trade for Martinez unless we somehow knew ahead of time the Reds were going to spend that $12M savings towards what they really need, a power OF bat.
Martinez's value should go up a little in our next update, but basically he's playing to the level of his contract, so there's little to no surplus value. However, the money is always a factor, because many teams don't have the budget room to take it on. Even big-market teams like the Yankees are cash-sensitive because they're over the highest luxury-tax line, which means any salary they take on will cost them twice as much in penalties. In any case, we do expect Martinez to be moved, but it's likely going to be a very small return because of that salary.
Hey Jon. Thanks for the clarification. Something I might suggest is making it more clear that your numbers are, indeed, surplus value, rather than specific valuations. I have seen at least one YouTuber who thinks the numbers are just valuations. I suspect a lot of folks out there are confused about what the numbers mean.
We've been on that mission for several years. Indeed, the explanations are all over the website, and spelled out specifically in the line next to each player. I'm not sure what more we can do.
I mean, it's right here as well: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/valuing-major-leaguers I get that it can be a hard concept to grasp, so we will continue to try to educate everyone.
Fair enough. With all you're doing, if people aren't getting it, then that's mostly on them.
