5I'm deeply disinclined to deal Elly. But if I did, it would be for what you have here: an organization's top 5 prospects.
I agree with you I would love to keep him, I am a Reds fan but we are not going to be able to, cant afford him once he becomes a FA. The question is when do we trade him. The longer we wait the more chance for serious injury or an unlikely but possible prolonged slump. The Reds are the kind of team that has to get max payback for someone like him that only falls in our laps once ever 20 years or whatever.
To maximize the return, by my estimation, the Reds will have to trade Elly with about 1.5 years left before FA. That means midway through the 2028 season. I'm thinking the Reds will get a return similar to what the Nationals got for Soto. Wood and Gore are productive major leaguers, and Hassell just got promoted to the big league club. If the Reds do that well, they'll be alright. Thing is, I'm going with Elly. I've been a lifelong Reds fan, but I can't stand the cheapness and non-aggression any longer. That club will never be built for a WS run, as long as the Castellinis own, and there continues to be income disparity in baseball.
I am not sure what you mean by your going with Elly. Does that mean you are not going to trade him and just let him walk when he gets to be a FA? If so that would be a disaster for the Reds! I agree about ownership as I am sure most Reds fans do. We do have some chance at a WS one day but we need all the help we can get and getting a haul back for Elly who basically fell into our laps. If we have 0 chance I would stop being a fan of the Reds. But sign me up for getting new ownership. One who wants to win and has deeper pockets than the group that we currently have.
Oh, I mean that when the Reds finally trade Elly, I'm turning my back on the team. That's barring some major change in spending philosophy or ownership. Otherwise, I'll find myself rooting for whichever team is lucky enough to get Elly.
