Rays say no. They are very much in the playoff race and aren’t going to trade a SP for a collection of defective players in the minors. Jones has some power but he also has a K problem and is only average in the field (at best). The Rays outfield is bursting with talented players, as is 1B/DH. Jones doesn’t fill a want or a need for the Rays. Arias is a far off defense first SS/2B, and the Rays have already collected several of those in the past year. I don’t think they need another. Waldron is an interesting potential SP, but he isn’t needed by the Rays who have better options in AAA in J.Boyle and I.Seymour, as well as former all-star S.McClanahan coming back from injury. It’s clear the Rays are part of this trade just to make the argument the Padres might consider trading Cease and Suarez to the Yankees, but the Rays want nothing to do with this trade, nor do I think the Padres would either.
