34 of the Pirates top 6 prospects are SPs and three are in AAA. They need hitters.
They're still bringing in a top 100 prospect hitter at a position of need. The Cubs would not have a need for Brown if they brought in Keller. You say they have all these pitching prospects, but the only ones I'd have faith in to fill a rotation role are Chandler and Barco. Harrington has been horrible this season. Ashcraft also hasn't been impressive. They seem like bullpen pieces.
Ashcraft has a 1.56 ERA in MLB in long relief because the rotation is full. Johan Oviedo is also out on rehab to come back shortly. If the Pirates trade Keller and you trust Barco and Chandler to be rotation pieces and they have Ashcraft and Oviedo where does Brown fit in? They also only have 2 hitters with 200+ PAs and a 100+ wRC+. They need hitters.
