7💁🏼♀️ Moises Chace just underwent Tommy John surgery. 🤔 Bohm is on the IL 👎 Red Sox are in contention 🥰
TJS is now so common that it tends to have very little effect on trade value for prospects; it mostly just delays their clocks (see: Andrew Painter).
John, Teams in contention are not trading for a pitcher that just had TJS 8 weeks ago and giving up value in a trade. Are you telling me that it is so common that it wouldn’t be a concern? That a team will consider trading for him? And sacrifice 25% of the return tied up in a TJS pitcher, for a team in contention? For a team on the bubble of contention? For a team looking to contend in ‘26? For a re tooling team or a re building team? To all of these I say NO, that they will not consider trading for a pitcher that just had TJS 8 weeks ago. Painter is much more removed from TJS date and is back pitching, teams have at least seen him pitching, he would be considered in trade proposals. I don’t think comparing the two clocks is reasonable. And I certainly don’t believe that “ TJS is now so common that it tends to have very little effect on trade value for prospects”.
All I'm saying is that it doesn't change the prospect's valuation all that much, as the talent is still there longer-term and the likelihood is that the pitcher will come back from it just fine. Whether it fits a specific team's package and acquisition strategy is a whole other matter.
I think any pitcher that goes down with TJS value drops to zero until he’s on a re hab assignment whether it fits a specific team's package or acquisition strategy as a whole doesn’t matter.
“ it doesn't change the prospect's valuation all that much, the talent is still there longer-term and the likelihood is that the pitcher will come back from it just fine” Does that apply to all surgeries (pitcher or a positional player) that are basically a year long time frame like a knee, or an Achilles tendon, or a shoulder….
No, it varies by injury type. It's all probability-based. If it's a one-off that typically heals, it shouldn't affect them much. If it's, say, a shoulder injury with a lower probability of success, that will matter more.
