So a 3 team trade at the Deadline. Not sure I've ever seen it, but what the hell... Rays have won 6 of their past 21 games. They look lifeless and pathetic, and if the decision hadn't been made to sell before tonight, the loss tonight should have been the final nail in the 2025 season's coffin. So the Rays trade expiring contract Littell and 1.5 years of Y.Diaz (plus a 1 year option) to the Padres in return for prospects at SS, C and SP. The Padres swap Cease and a far off SS prospect for Littell and Y.Diaz. Littell is a dropoff from Cease, but improving the DH position with Yandy more than makes up for that dropoff. The Padres have the worst DH position in all the Majors according to Fangraphs, getting just 85 wRC+ and -0.6 fWAR from the position in 2025. Yandy fixes that problem immediately. The Yankees join the trade to improve their rotation with Cease and to provide the kind of prospects the Rays require to move Littell and Y.Diaz to the Padres. Cease obviously steps into the Yankees rotation and helps solidy that unit for the playoff race and the playoffs themselves.
