3I can see the Rays trading Yandy and Fairbanks (the other two “big names” with the Rays), but trading B.Lowe for pocket lint??? Yeah, I don’t see that. There’s no upside to trading him for pocket lint and there’s no downside to keeping him other than the $3MM he is owed for this year (next year is a team option).
The Rays owe Lowe $11.5m next season. He’s either going now or in the off-season. The Rays don’t have any good catching prospects and Janek is one of the best in baseball.
I don't follow your logic. Rays are paying Lowe $10.5 million this year and can afford to pay him next year. Plus, his value to the franchise cannot be overstated. He went on IL and the Rays started losing and are now sellers at the Deadline. Rays can replace Yandy. They can't replace Lowe. As for catching prospects, the Rays are pretty high on Keegan, their top catching prospect who is hitting 121 wRC+ (.852 OPS) in AAA this year. I'd love to see them add Janek, but not at the expense of Lowe.
