1Yandy is a 3 WAR 1B/DH on a $12MM deal for 2026. All his topline and underlying stats look great. Mets let Alonso walk and arguably improve the position at 1/2 price for 2026 (and almost no long term risk, other than a 2027 vesting/team option on Yandy’s deal that is a no-brainer pickup if he looks this good next year). Yandy is woefully undervalued because of his age (34) and that vesting option ($13 MM for 2027), so the Rays strike a deal with the Mets for far off high risk/reward prospects to get the right upside. I’m a huge fan of Santucci and Rodriguez and believe they have very bright futures. If the Rays are going to trade a cheap 3 WAR player, then they better get something good in return. This trade looks good to me. For the Mets, this season has to be seen as a disappointment, even if they make the postseason. I gotta think they will focus on getting an Ace to lead the rotation and those guys are expensive. This trade helps set that up.
