7Cleveland just hangs up if this was offered... Duran is a solid player, but he's a plus LF that can play CF and his value on here is overrated... Also, to say CJ Kayfus couldn't hit .240/.250 and 16 HRs over a full season would be silly... This deal doesn't do enough for Cleveland to merit it in my mind.
Durran may be overrated here, but I was working to get the math right. Out of curiosity, have you ever seen a trade you thought CLE would make? You seem to hate all of them... They can only hug so many prospects for some time. I want to see the kids play this year over retreads, but if you can consolidate so guys to get a proven bat, it's time to do it
I don't like most, mostly because I take into account past history of moves Cleveland made and how I see the direction of the team going. Cleveland is actually notorious for being very hard to actually trade with. Like for Kwan, they don't have to trade him so unless needs are meet, he's not going anywhere... Their needs are RH hitters, then want better production from SS and CF and SP depth... Duran isn't enough of an upgrade over a projected DeLauter/Kayfus to merit moving this much for him. Now, let's say they moved Kwan for CF/SS, plus SP depth, then Duran makes a ton more sense, but not at 70+ value... If you had Duran at 40/50 value, I think Cleveland would put up a deal to go get him if Kwan wasn't around... Most people believe Guardians just trade cap to trade cap and that's not true at all... Antonetti in playoff seasons has 120-130 million to use, which Dolan is willing to go higher than to get a World Series. Cleveland just avoids negative contracts and/or blocking top prospects... Bazzana won't be blocked... DeLauter/Kayfus won't be blocked... They need a number 2 bat in the lineup, on paper, Duran isnt a #2 hitter... They would be willing to give up this package for a legit #2 hitter... Duran should be in the 5/6 spot cause of his SO totals...
Agreed on Bazz and CDL, though I think both are OFers eventually. I don't think Kayfus is the kind of player you worry about blocking. Solid depth/not projected to be a star. You don't avoid a Duran for Kayfus. I wish they would spend $120-130M, cause then the answer is just sign Pete Alonso for 1B and let the kids play. Kwan, Alonso, Jose, Manzardo, CDL, Arias, Bo, Valera, Rocchio (until Bazz is ready). But with the TV contract issues and impending lockout, I dont think they add too much salary. Lastly, agree...Duran should be closer to 40/50...then you're talking about LTA/Cantillo, top 10 prospect and top 25 prospect which makes a lot more sense
Cleveland brought up Kayfus faster than almost any guy they have before in the Antonetti era, they even had him change positions just to bring him up... Also, I think Kayfus under a full season will get to 100-110 in OPS+ he just doesn't have the speed Duran does... Cleveland has him ranked way higher than BTV does... Brito also should be back and healthy and Brito can hit... Position wise is a question mark... I feel like they need to go big and Duran isnt the answer... I would love Alonso, but the amount of years he wants doesn't fit what Cleveland does. If Alonso sighed a 3 year deal... Cleveland would match anyone AAV wise in a heart beat, but with him getting 5-7 and being a 1B, I am doubting Cleveland could ever swing that since they don't sign guys over a certain age at a certain monetary value...
Caveat on Kayfus’ call up is injuries to Brito/CDL and other options. Not saying he’s not good or not valued but not someone you worry about blocking. I’d love if Brito could be playable in RF. That would answer a lot of questions.
Ps. Trust me, I know Cleveland needs to consolidate their prospects some, but they aren't going to trade to make a trade... They either get the guy they need or hold onto who they have. Cleveland fans are getting a bit anxious about the fact we haven't gotten that big bat to help Ramirez... Duran is a solid player, but not the game changer Cleveland needs at that type of price.
