After losing their stadium and a 2nd half collapse so bad that it cemented Rays ownership selling the team, the Rays new ownership should try for a triumphant return to the Trop while seeking public funds for a new stadium. To quote Nuke Laloosh, they need to announce their presence with authority! What better way than finally for the first time ever trading some young talent for expensive vets who'll post like 50 WAR and 500 HR over the next 9 years for the boys in the Bay. Although his arm is weaker than would be desired, Bogaerts' range is still excellent, and in this scenario he would hold down SS for a few years until a better option emerges, where he would move to 2nd. I am not at all a believer in future middle reliever Barreled Up Baz and his horrific secondaries, so losing him and replacing him with McClan/Jax/Trade/Houser(?) is more than acceptable to me. With the Padres paying half of Bogaerts' salary, $100M over 8 years is suddenly pretty enticing, as I expect he can produce 10-12 wins over the next 5 years. Tatis is one of the 10 or so biggest stars in MLB, and would make for an excellent marketing tool and player to build around, especially if they can lock up Caminero and Aranda. If you are even considering spending $400M on Tucker, spend $400 on Bogaerts and Tatis instead, even if it costs you Carson Williams (who is the only player I would miss in this scenario). For the Padres, they won 93 games last year, and even though they hired Ted Lasso to be their manager, this return would still allow them to compete with the Dodgers and for a wildcard for years to come. Best case scenario, Baz lives up to the hype and Lowe returns to the 4 win OF he was 2 years ago, while Williams and Morgan are starters by the deadline. Worst case scenario, at least they shed $400M in salary before selling the team.
