1This isn’t a trade I can see the Rays making. For one, the Rays never pay up for talent and Marte would be their biggest acquisition, perhaps ever. Second, Baseball Resource believes Marte is owed $93MM over the next 5 years, not the $80MM listed here. That pushes Marte’s salary to $18.6MM AAV, which I can’t see the Rays paying to a 32-36 year old, who is more likely than not going to incur more injuries and regression going forward. Then there is giving up Hopkins, who is more than just a number (ie: his trade value). He is a legit TOR candidate with a 5 pitch mix and several put away pitches. I can’t see the Rays trading him at this point. Simply put, the Rays are not 1 player away and this trade doesn’t work for the Rays.
