2Just spitballing here... Rumor has it A.J. Preller is working on yet another blockbuster trade idea, but also that he's not willing to trade Tatis. That leaves only Jackson Merrill as the big piece he'd give up. In this scenario, he'd go to the Nationals, who get a franchise CF for the next decade to build around. On the Padres' side, they'd fill most of their other holes -- three starting pitchers, one swingman, Duran to replace Merrill in CF, and Garcia to take 2B (sliding Cronenworth to 1B), while also shedding a bad reliever contract to create wiggle room in the budget. On the Red Sox' side, they'd get Abrams' peak years, figuring they'd move him to 2B, where his defense should play better; they'd get rid of Yoshida's contract and clear his roster spot; but to do so they'd give up one of their top young pitchers, plus a swingman, and clear Duran's OF spot. They'd also get a catching prospect as a sweetener. The trickiest part would be getting the Nationals' owner to sign off on taking two bad contracts -- which, I suspect, is a no. But fun to think about.
Seems like an opportunity for the A's to get involved and take on the Matsui contract for some sort of sweetener... OR... Boston needs a LHRP so they could take Matsui as they flip Jordan Hicks and $3 MM annual cash to the A's. The salary difference between Hicks and Matsui means Boston saves about $3 MM annual through 2027 in the trade. The Red Sox can kick in a post-Rule 5 prospect to the A's.
