Athletics won't compete next season and need to look forward to Vegas. Petty would be a guy that could be a solid 3 in a rotation maybe even next season, and Gavin Lux would be solid at 2B for them The true meaning of this trade is to give the Reds 2 cheap bullpen arms and a solid hitter with pop while giving the Athletics a very solid potential return towards their Vegas days.
You could be right about the A's next season. I'm just saying that's not where their mindset is at this offseason. When they talk about 2028 it's in the context of locking up guys like Soderstrom, Kurtz, Wilson... and that'll be harder to do if they trade away someone they just signed to an extension a year ago. The only way I see the A's trading a core bat is if they know they're getting a SP that can slot in the rotation ahead of their current arms and Petty, for all his potential, hasn't proven that. I think you're wrong on Lux being solid as a starting 2B.
