The Marte rumors don’t make sense. The Rays currently have a $95MM payroll before you include Franco’s $15.5MM (and things are moving the wrong way in regards to Franco). Ownership has said they’d like to keep payroll around $85MM, which means they need to move one of B.Lowe or Y.Diaz to get down to their self imposed spending limit. Adding Marte would require the trade of both Diaz and Lowe. Rays ain’t making the playoffs if they trade both Diaz and Lowe. (and Baz and Pep to get Marte), so why bother trading for Marte? As for Keller, it’s not just Keller’s contract that is the problem. Rays will have at least 5 top pitching prospects in AAA next year and will need to start bringing them up at some point. Adding Keller to a rotation with Ras and McClanny (and other options like Seymour and Boyle) would be overkill starting next year.
