I’m shocked the Marlins traded Cabrera for this package. It pales in comparison to the Rays’ return for Baz, and the headliner (Caissie) has huge bust potential because of his K rate. Awful return.

Carternico

Awful return is very aggressive. Caissie is wildly regarded as a Top 50 prospect. The Marlins have an absurd amount of starting pitching depth… definitely a good deal for both sides.

Is it? Marlins sold Cabrera at a discount according to BTV valuations, and the return is essentially 2 players and a lottery ticket. The two players have pretty big holes in their games. In Caissie’s case, it’s a sky high K rate. In Hernandez’s case, it’s an average at best bat with little power (ie: a replaceable utility player, not a starter). This trade only works if Caissie becomes a stud, and I’m not putting money down on that bet. His ceiling is probably Joey Gallo, who had 4 good years in his 10 year career (9 year career if we ignore his 2nd season with only 30 PAs).

To be fair, Cabrera has a couple things working against him. He's not that great outside of the huge Miami park. And he doesn't pitch more than 100 innings a season. I think he was overvalued here, and the Marlins got a fair deal for him. In fact, as a Reds fan, I kinda like seeing him go to the Cubs.

Fair enough. He has never pitched as well as his tools suggest he’s capable of pitching.

It's really only one player and two lottery tickets. Hernandez was Rule 5-eligible last month, and every team passed on him. The Marlins could have had him for free, and just parked him. Based on that clock, he'll be out of options if he ever makes it to the MLB level, and given his weak bat, will likely be passed around the waiver wire, as guys without options tend to do.

So probably more of a throw in than a lottery ticket. That does make the trade worse for the Marlins.

Fair trade all around. I said last summer Caissie should be properly valued at 25 and it sure looks like the Marlins agreed. Sounds like the Marlins wanted a similar package in July but Jed hesitated. Go Cubbies!

I guess I’m alone on this take as seen by the 9 likes and 0 dislikes. I don’t love Edward Cabrera. Extensive injury history and nothing great for a pitcher. Shoulder/elbow/blisters and he’s really only put together one full season. Obviously the talent is there and he can be very good but 1. I like Owen Caissie and 2. Love the Marlins pitching depth. I personally like this more for the Marlins
