I doubt Walls plays 2B all year. He might play some, but more likely the Rays will play him at SS, and Palacios, Aranda or a trade acquisition will play 2B. That will allow C.Williams to start the year in AAA, which seems to be the plan to gain an extra year of control. As for this trade, Massey isn’t an improvement on Palacios, so I doubt he would be of interest. He bats left handed and the Rays are overloaded with lefties at the moment. They really need a righty (C.Williams is a righty for what it’s worth). In his favor, Massey is still pre-arb and has options, which the Rays would love. The biggest problem is the cost. Cleavinger is not some throw away player. He’s a critical member of the Rays’ Bullpen who is often asked to put out mid-inning fires or pitching in high leverage innings. I can’t see them giving him away, which is what this trade represents. Swap out Massey for Ramirez and you’ve got yourself a trade.
