2Both are top tier prospects that are highly regarded in the Farm system for a player that is almost always hurt. An extra pitcher and low tier prospect should be offered at most
Thanks for chiming in, I love talking trades. This proposal doesn’t feel that far off, it’s the Giants rumored to be interested in Hoerner, not the other way around so the Giants will need to step it up with any offer. With that being said, this proposal doesn’t include the tippy top of the Giants’ system, no Gonzalez, not Eldridge, and no Davidson. Martinez and Level are still a long ways away, both are still at low-A, they’re far from finished products so there’s a ton of risk that either make it to the bigs. Whereas Hoerner is a 4+ WAR player right now, plays both 2B/SS, and comes with a 1st round comp pick to the acquiring team at the end of the season if he chooses not to re-sign. Hoerner’s from the Bay area so the Giants would have a good chance of extending him and they’d have exclusive rights to do so right away. If anything, this deal is probably a little light from the Cubs’ perspective. They’ve got a great roster and lineup and so trading a 4+ WAR player doesn’t make a lot of sense if the plan is to really go for it especially for a couple of low-A prospects that won’t contribute. Financially the Cubs are just over the first luxury tax threshold which does carry a minor financial penalty but that will reset next offseason when they lose a ton of higher priced FA’s that they’re mostly able to replace with graduating prospects. I still like this trade for both teams, the Giants get to try and woo Hoerner into an extension and get 4 WAR and a 1st round pick if he doesn’t re-sign. The Cubs do a little restocking of their lower farm system to start cooking another wave of prospects.
