1This is akin to arthroscopic surgery for the Red Sox. They clean up the last of their non essential pieces for 2026 before they completely lose all value for two needs that they still have. Romero isn’t the last option but he is the best option and Red Sox may be eager to move past 5 their potential clubhouse distractions/misfits who don’t have defined roles this year. Casas is the biggest headache for Sox to move, but could be a headache for other teams as well. Cardinals get some lottery tickets, but it would only take one to hit. Houck is a nice dream for 2027, but for now offsets some of Romero salary and helps build the package for the birds. Cards shouldn’t trade Romero without multiple assets coming back and Yankees are still lurking in the background giving the Sox even more incentive to overpay.
