3Rays have a full outfield. This trade wouldn’t work for them.
Bush League teams have a full OF, That doesn't mean that they are good & doesn't need a lot of help.
You want a deeper dive analysis, ok by me. (1) Rasmussen is the Rays best pitcher by far right now. You don’t trade your TOR for a 1-2 fWAR outfielder. (2) Rasmussen has only 50-60% of the trade value he would have if he wasn’t such an injury risk. You can take that to mean the Rays should trade him while he’s healthy, but the other way to see it is that the Rays cannot improve on the field by trading Ras for 50-60% of his worth. (3) Wallner might not be an improvement on the Rays’ existing options in the outfield (or at least he won’t be much of an improvement). A lot of his trade value is based on his 4 years of control. This is a guy who hit 114 wRC+ last year while getting his most ever PAs at 392 (for just 1.4 fWAR) and he’s a below average fielder, logging negative DRS and OAA. He's just a guy, not a difference maker. Worse, he’s a LHB, as are Mullins, Fraley, C.Simpson and J.Melton with the Rays. I’m not a fan of Fraley, but I like the other 3 as much or more than Wallner. (4) Last but not least, the Rays are heading in to the last year of a rebuild before a long lockout. They would be stupid to trade a desirable Deadline trade chip like Ras for a guy like Wallner in a year the Rays are almost assured of missing the playoffs. The smart play is to keep Ras until the Deadline and then trade him for a top 100 prospect who won’t lose a year of control during the lockout. At least that’s my perspective.
